1. Who publishes this site

This site is published by an individual, Emily Patterson. There is no company behind it and nobody else has access to the material described here.

As a small business operator the publisher falls within the exception in section 6D of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and is not automatically bound by it. She applies the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) to this site voluntarily and treats the commitments below as binding on herself.

2. What this notice covers

It covers the pages served at puzzleread.com and the e-mail that arrives at the desk address above, including correspondence about the Read Room subscription. It does not cover the Google Play store, run by Google LLC under its own terms, nor any game listed here.

3. What this site deliberately does not do

• There is no form anywhere on the site — no contact form, no search box, no sign-up field. Nothing can be typed into a page.
• The publisher installs no counter, tag manager or measurement tool of her own. The one measurement running here is the Cloudflare script described in 4.3, added by the delivery network itself.
• No advertising is carried, and no cookie of any kind is set on this site — neither by the publisher nor by anyone else.
• Browser notifications are never requested.
• No account can be created and no password is held.

The practical result is that if you read these pages and never write to the desk, the publisher does not learn who you are.

4. Categories of personal information, purpose, basis and retention

4.1 Correspondence you send by e-mail

What: your e-mail address, any name or signature you include, and the content of the message and its attachments. Source: you, directly. Purpose: reading and answering the message. Basis: your decision to write; handling correspondence is a reasonably expected use under APP 6. Retention: 24 months from the last message in the thread, then deleted, unless it concerns a complaint or a subscription question, when 4.2 applies.

4.2 Read Room subscription records

What: the e-mail address the subscription runs on, the date consent was confirmed, the billing dates, the amount of A$0.99 per month and the date any cancellation took effect. Source: you, and the payment provider. Purpose: sending the letters you asked for, answering questions about a charge and meeting consumer guarantee obligations. Basis: the arrangement between you and the publisher, and your consent to the letters. Retention: two years after the subscription ends. Card numbers are never seen or stored by the publisher.

4.3 Technical delivery data and the Cloudflare measurement script

What: the address of the page requested, the referring address, the country derived from your IP address, coarse device and browser type, and Core Web Vitals loading figures such as LCP, CLS and INP. Source: partly generated when a page is delivered, and partly reported by Cloudflare Web Analytics — a small script (beacon.min.js) that Cloudflare, Inc. adds to every page as it is served. It is not part of the site files, cannot be taken out by editing a page, and is the only request a page makes to another company's server; fonts, stylesheet, script and pictures all come from this domain. It sets no cookie, stores nothing in your browser and gives you no identifier, so it neither recognises you on a later visit nor follows you to another site. Purpose: delivering the page, keeping it fast and protecting the site from automated abuse. Basis: the operational need to run a working website. Retention: the figures stay with Cloudflare, Inc. under its own schedule; the publisher sees only aggregate charts and cannot link them to a person.

4.4 The local storage entry

What: one entry named pr:noticeAck holding the word you chose on the notice. Source: your click. Purpose: to stop the notice reappearing. Retention: until you clear site data; it is never sent to the publisher, holds no identifier, is not a cookie and cannot be read by another site.

5. Who else sees this information

• Cloudflare, Inc. (101 Townsend St, San Francisco, California, United States) delivers the pages as a content delivery network, provides DNS and security filtering, and operates the Cloudflare Web Analytics script it adds to each page. It therefore receives the technical delivery data in 4.3, in the United States. Cloudflare does not receive e-mail correspondence.
• The hosting provider that runs the origin server for this domain, in the European Union, stores the page files and the server access log. Its identity is given on request.
• The e-mail providers at both ends of a message: the one you send from, and the one hosting the desk mailbox.
• The payment provider that takes the monthly charge, for Read Room subscribers only.

Personal information is never sold, rented or handed to a data broker or a marketing list.

6. Disclosure outside Australia (APP 8)

Two of the recipients above sit outside Australia: Cloudflare, Inc. in the United States, and the hosting provider in the European Union. Reading a page therefore discloses the technical delivery data in 4.3, including what the Cloudflare Web Analytics script reports, to a recipient in the United States. Before that disclosure the publisher has taken the steps APP 8.1 calls reasonable for a one-person editorial page: choosing providers with published privacy commitments and contractual data protection terms, and limiting what reaches them to technical delivery data and the page files. She cannot guarantee that an overseas recipient will handle that data exactly as an APP entity would, and this paragraph is notice of that under APP 8.2. If you would rather nothing of yours travelled outside Australia, write to the desk by post rather than by e-mail.

7. Your rights and how to use them

Under APP 12 and APP 13 you may ask for access to the personal information held about you, and for it to be corrected if it is wrong, out of date or misleading. You may also ask for correspondence to be deleted earlier than the periods above, or revoke consent for the Read Room letters at any time.

Send the request to letters@puzzleread.com or to the postal address in section 1. No particular wording is needed; a reply comes within 30 days and access is free. The publisher may ask you to write from the address the correspondence came from, so that nothing is handed to the wrong person; no identity document is requested.

8. Complaints

If you believe your privacy has been mishandled, write to the desk with “privacy complaint” in the subject line. It is acknowledged within 5 business days and answered in writing within 30 days.

If that answer does not satisfy you, take the matter to the OAIC:

The OAIC normally asks that you write to the publisher first and allow 30 days for an answer.

9. Age

This site is written for adults and is not directed at people under 15. The publisher does not knowingly hold personal information about anyone under that age; if it arrives by e-mail it is deleted as soon as it is noticed, and a parent or guardian may ask for that at the desk address.

10. Security

Pages are served only over HTTPS, and the desk mailbox is protected by a long unique passphrase and two-factor authentication. No card details, identity documents or health information are collected. The strongest protection is how little is held: no database, no accounts and no server-side code that stores anything.

11. Direct marketing and the Spam Act 2003

The only e-mail the desk sends unprompted is a Read Room letter, and only to a person who asked for it in writing. Every letter names Emily Patterson as the sender, gives the postal address in section 1 and carries a working unsubscribe line that takes effect within 5 business days, as the Spam Act 2003 (Cth) requires. No list is bought, harvested or shared.

12. Changes to this notice

If the site changes in a way that affects this notice, the text is rewritten and the effective date at the top moves forward. Material changes are noted at the head of this page for 60 days, and Read Room subscribers are told by e-mail beforehand. This version is effective from 2 September 2026.
